BUILDING A NEW FUTURE FOR WORKING FAMILIES

Our worlds have been turned upside down in the last 20 months, as we have adapted how we worship, work, educate our children, grocery shop, and so much more. This has also been a time when many of us more fully realized the stark injustice of income inequality and its suffocating impact.

As a nation we recognize that we are being kept safe and comfortable because of workers, from healthcare, to first responders, to farm workers and food production workers, to grocery workers. We have come to appreciate how essential their contribution is to our lives. Many of these workers suffered greatly and many are still suffering. And some workers are still waiting to be recalled so they can experience economic recovery. This Labor Day let's honor all of these workers and re-commit ourselves to support them in securing their rights. 

In Chicago, building this new future is underway with the passing of some pro-worker policies in the past year. There is a new law that provides paid time off for workers to get vaccinated. There is a new law so that laid-off hotel workers will be rehired as hotels reopen. There is a new law that brings domestic workers up to minimum pay of $15 an hour and, effective January 1, 2022, it mandates that their employers provide a written contract. We are excited to report that Chicago is the first city in the nation to require a written contract for domestic workers, which is a positive gain for those who provide in-home care for our elderly and children, and clean our homes. If there are some employers of domestic workers in this congregation, Arise and the City of Chicago stand ready to help you get that contract in place before January 1. 

On the federal level, there is proposed legislation called The PRO-Act, “Protecting the Right to Organize Act'', which would allow workers to more freely join a union without harassment, which is sadly quite common now. The PRO-Act would close the income inequality gap, help secure safe workplaces, strengthen the middle class, stabilize communities, and put the U.S. on par with other industrialized countries. The ProAct is the most significant worker empowerment legislation since the Great Depression.  It has passed in the U.S. House of Representatives and is now being considered in the U.S. Senate. This bill will recognize all workers for their God-given inherent dignity and their right to organize. 

Laws reflect our values. But, laws do not get passed by themselves. It requires a community -- organized together in lifting up the dignity of workers and the values of the work itself. Thank you for being a part of that community! Over our 30-year history, Arise Chicago has connected our broad interfaith network with working people. We are proud that this congregation has been a part of the mission to bring a fuller measure of God’s justice to all workplaces.

CONSTRUYENDO UN NUEVO FUTURO PARA LAS FAMILIAS TRABAJADORAS

Nuestras vidas se han volteado de cabeza en los últimos 20 meses. Hemos adaptado la forma en que adoramos a Dios, trabajamos, educamos a nuestros hijos, vamos de compras, y mucho más. Este también ha sido un momento en que nosotros nos damos cuenta más claramente de la tremenda injusticia debido a la desigualdad de ingresos y su asfixiante impacto.

Como nación, reconocemos que nos  mantuvimos seguros y cómodos por los trabajadores. Desde los trabajadores de la salud hasta los trabajadores de los servicios de urgencia, los trabajadores de los supermercados y los trabajadores agrícolas. Hemos llegado a apreciar como es de esencial la contribución de los trabajadores en  nuestras vidas. Muchos de estos trabajadores sufrieron mucho y siguen sufriendo. Trabajadores en restaurantes, hoteles, convenciones y muchos más todavía esperan ser regresados a sus trabajos y ser parte de la recuperación económica. Este Día del trabajo, debemos honrar a todos los trabajadores y volver a comprometernos en apoyar la garantía de sus derechos. 

La construcción de este nuevo futuro está en marcha aquí en Chicago, con la aprobación de algunas políticas a favor de los trabajadores el año pasado. Hay una nueva ley que proporciona tiempo libre para los trabajadores que quieren recibir la vacuna. Hay una nueva ley para que los trabajadores en hoteles sean recontratados cuando los hoteles vuelvan a abrir. Hay una nueva ley que eleva el salario mínimo para las trabajadoras domésticas a $15 la hora y exige un contrato escrito para estos trabajadores. Es crucial para los trabajadores que cuidan a nuestros ancianos, discapacitados y niños, y limpian nuestras casas. Si hay empleadores de trabajadoras domésticas en esta congregación, Arise Chicago y la ciudad de Chicago están listos para ayudarlo a obtener un contrato antes del primero de Enero.

A nivel nacional, hay nueva legislación que se llamaba El Pro-Act, “La Ley de Protección del Derecho a Organizarse” permitiría a los trabajadores afiliarse más libremente a un sindicato sin sufrir acoso, lo que es bastante común ahora. El Pro-Act cerraría la brecha de desigualdad de ingresos, ayudaría a garantizar lugares de trabajo seguros, fortalecería la clase media, estabilizará las comunidades y pondría a los Estados Unidos junto a otros países industrializados. El Pro-Act es la legislación más significativa para empoderar a los trabajadores desde la Gran Depresión. Ha sido aprobada por la Cámara de Representantes, y que ahora está siendo considerada en el Senado, reconocerá a todos los trabajadores por su dignidad inherente que Dios les ha dado, y su derecho a organizarse. 

Las Leyes reflejan nuestros valores. Pero las leyes no se aprueban solas. Requiere una comunidad organizada y que aprecie el valor y la dignidad de los trabajadores y del trabajo. Gracias por ser parte de esta comunidad. Durante nuestros 30 años, Arise Chicago ha conectado nuestra amplia red interreligiosa con gente trabajadora. Estamos orgullosos de que esta congregación haya sido parte de la misión de traer la justicia de Dios a todos los lugares del trabajo.
