Support the SureBuilt Workers

SureBuilt workers who make construction materials in Melrose Park, Illinois, are facing significant workplace problems:

  • Unsafe working conditions, including outdated, unmaintained equipment, lack of proper training, and minimal access to personal protective equipment (PPE), resulting in severe preventable injuries.
  • Unfair employment practices, where long-term workers remain classified as “temporary,” with no clear path to permanent positions or job security. Workers also lack benefits and acceptable wages.
  • Dehumanizing treatment, including constant surveillance, micromanagement of basic needs like bathroom breaks, and relentless pressure to work faster, at the expense of workers’ health and dignity.

To improve their conditions, SureBuilt workers have been organizing with Arise Chicago and Painters District Council 14.

We call on SureBuilt management to immediately:

  1. Recognize the workers’ union.
  2. Implement comprehensive safety protocols and provide proper PPE and training.
  3. Offer fair, transparent pathways to permanent employment.
  4. Treat all workers with dignity, ending excessive surveillance and mistreatment.
