Arise Chicago trains, organizes, and develops the leadership of low-wage, primarily immigrant workers and religious allies to improve working conditions and advance working family policies.

Begun by the faith community in 1991, Arise Chicago brings low-wage immigrant workers, faith leaders and congregations, union leadership and rank-and-file members, elected officials, academics, legal advisors, and community leaders together to create economic justice and social change.


Member Organizer

Job Description:

Full time position to work closely with and develop low-wage, primarily immigrant workers into powerful leaders in the labor movement.

Reports to Worker Center Program Director.

 

Responsibilities:

Internal Organizing - 40%

  • Conduct 1 on 1 meetings with promising new members & assess leadership potential
  • Asses for and recruit members to attend Leadership Institute
  • Plan Leadership Institute weekend trainings twice a year
  • Plan and execute annual Member Unity Potluck
  • Plan and coordinate annual Member Victory Party
  • Recruit and train members to become workshop trainers
  • Maintain membership records & track leadership data
  • Identify leadership development opportunities for members
  • Identify and recruit member candidates for Board of Directors
  • Produce member educational materials including flyers and social media materials
  • Maintain communication with membership via meetings, phone calls, mass texts, social media, and e-boletin newsletters
  • Create and distribute membership ID cards and t-shirts
  • Report and advocate for membership during weekly staff meeting

External Organizing - 40%

  • Coordinate with and support Arise Chicago staff on workplace organizing campaigns
  • Mobilize members to support the workplace campaigns of fellow members
  • Mobilize members to support the campaigns of Arise allies, including Raise the Floor, sister worker centers, advocacy groups, and labor unions
  • Mobilize members to support the organization’s public policy campaigns
  • Recruit and prepare members to represent the organization to religious congregation partners, including at annual Labor in the Pulpit event
  • Recruit, prepare, and accompany members to represent the organization in conferences
  • Recruit and prepare members to participate in fundraising, including foundation site visits and annual Breakfast fundraiser

New Member Outreach & Education - 10%

  • Recruit new worker members for the organization
  • Lead monthly Workers’ Rights Workshops at Arise & periodically at community locations
  • Greet “walk-in” workers who arrive in person to the Worker Center
  • Manage worker center hotline: respond to worker inquiries invite to upcoming workshops
  • Represent the organization in community and coalition settings

Administrative Support - 10%

  • Provide data for grant writing and reporting, as requested
  • Produce annual membership report for staff retreat
  • Manage the renting & borrowing of equipment, including projector/interpretation devices
  • Collaborate with communications director to maintain and update website

 

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Full English and Spanish bilingual fluency is required (native Spanish-speakers preferred). Please do not apply if you are not fully bilingual
  • Basic training in community or union organizing
  • Strong respect for and comfort working with diverse immigrant and religious communities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in groups
  • Familiarity with leadership development practices
  • Commitment to social justice and the empowerment of low-income communities
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and meeting facilitation skills
  • Basic computer skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years of community or union organizing experience
  • Teaching or training experience
  • First-hand work experience in low-wage jobs

Workplace Justice Campaigns Organizer

Job Description:

Full time position to train and support individual and groups of low-wage, primarily immigrant workers to improve their workplace conditions and grow as worker leaders.

Reports to Worker Center Program Director.

 

Responsibilities:

Organize Workplace Justice Campaigns 75%

  • Conduct comprehensive individual and group intakes for workplace justice campaigns regarding workplace problems such as wage theft, health & safety hazards, discrimination, and sexual harassment
  • Organize members to collect evidence of workplace exploitation, gather information about their employer target, and gain co-worker support
  • Develop campaign strategies and communicate risks to workers
  • Organize members to lead direct actions including community delegations, public protests, press conferences, and employer negotiations
  • Coordinate comprehensive campaign strategy with community and religious allies, government agencies, and attorneys
  • Coordinate with Communications Director to prepare members to communicate their campaigns, including to allies and media
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings to select, plan, and evaluate workplace justice campaigns
  • Maintain good campaign records and enter worker campaign data into database
  • Conduct campaign closing interviews to elicit members’ recommendations for improvements and recruit members for continued leadership development
  • Assess workplace justice campaigns to identify organizing opportunities and refer members to the Strategic Campaigns Organizer
  • Train and supervise organizing interns
  • Provide support to the Strategic Campaigns organizer

Support Member Organizer to Develop Member Leadership 15%

  • Recruit campaign leaders to become Arise members
  • Work closely with the Member Organizer to train worker members in organizing skills and link to other educational opportunities
  • In conjunction with the Member Organizer, recommend members to attend the Leadership Institute, join member committees, become trainers, and join the Board of Directors
  • Assist Member Organizer to mobilize members for organizational events, meet with funders, speak to the media, attend coalition meetings, volunteer at the office, and otherwise become more involved in the organization
  • Facilitate worker member consciousness and foster analysis of individual workplace exploitation in relation to broader social issues and systemic inequality

Participate in other Arise Chicago Activities as needed 10%

  • Provide support for Arise Chicago’s broader campaigns including: union solidarity campaigns, immigrant rights campaigns, and public policy campaigns
  • Contribute to Arise Chicago’s overall strategy and organizational development
  • Collect and submit campaign data reports for evaluation and grants
  • Support fundraising, communications, and other administrative tasks

 

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

Development Director

Job Description:

Full time development position to lead and grow fundraising strategies.

Reports to Executive Director.

 

Responsibilities:

80% Grant/fund development and management, including:

  • Direct organization’s comprehensive fundraising plan
  • Lead writing and submission of all application-based fundraising efforts
  • Maintain organizational grants calendar, and track all funder information in database
  • Prepare for and lead foundation site visits, including preparing worker-members to participate in site visits
  • Deepen current, and develop new funder relationships
  • Facilitate quarterly meetings with directors to carry out fundraising plan
  • Direct individual giving program, including End of Year Appeal
  • Create annual report of accomplishments to send to funders, with Communications Director
  • Coordinate annual fundraising event, “Faith-Labor-Action Breakfast” that draws 500+ allies and stakeholders with Executive Director

20% Financial oversight, planning, and organization activities as needed including:

  • Oversee financial planning and budgeting
  • Attend and lead financial reporting at quarterly board meetings
  • Review financial activity, including cash flow and annual audit with Accounts Manager
  • Support organizational work and mission, including at rallies, press conferences, etc.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bilingual ability in English and Spanish  
  • Demonstrated ability to set and achieve multiple goals under deadlines
  • Commitment to social justice values including race, gender, and economic justice

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in fundraising or philanthropy
  • Experience in researching and gaining new foundation and funding sources
  • Experience in event planning
  • Experience interacting with foundation program officers
  • Experience interacting with immigrant community and religious community
  • Experience in and/or understanding of community grassroots organizing

Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal communication and persuasive communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently with a minimum of supervision and effectively in a team environment, including delegating tasks
  • Language ability in Spanish and English
  • Computer proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, google drive, basic social media, and fundraising database
  • Experience with Nation Builder database, a plus
